A DANCE instructor who specialises in Irish dance is celebrating 25 years of teaching after helping her students achieve national success.

Eileen Plater travels from Lancashire to Wensleydale each week to teach a group of girls traditional Irish dancing skills. Many of her students have met with considerable success over the years, with Rachael Lee, 23, and Alana Hodgson, 14, both achieving national and regional championships.

The dances, called Feis-Celtic for festival, are loosely based on those made popular by Michael Flattery’s Riverdance and are for the moment for young people only.

Ms Planter said: “Teaching traditional Irish dancing skills such as these are very useful for either the Duke of Edinburgh awards and university applications; they are held in very high esteem. It is also great for making friends and competing around the country."

The Irish dancers meet at Harmby Village Hall at 5.30pm every Wednesday, except the first of the month when they are at Fremington; anybody interested just turn up.
