A NORTH Yorkshire beauty spot is to feature in a new “mindfulness channel” which is designed to help rail passengers feel relaxed and positive on their journeys.

Aysgarth Falls, near Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales, is to feature on Virgin Trains’ new onboard mindfulness channel.

Shot from the banks of the River Ure, it will appear on one of six specially shot videos of calming locations from around the UK.

The dedicated channel was designed with the help of the Mental Health Foundation and is intended to promote positive mental health and was launched to mark World Mental Health Day.

The “Be Mindful” channel also showcases a real-time video of a train journey, taking its cue from the Scandinavian trend for “slow television”.

It isn’t the first time the Yorkshire Dales has featured in a meditative film. The video comes after the BBC attracted nearly a million viewers to a BBC Four “slow television” documentary featuring more than two hours of footage captured from the number 830 Northern Dalesman bus as it travelled 40 miles around the Yorkshire Dales.

The real-time, slow films have been filmed from the driver’s cab, running at over four hours in each direction and includes the East Coast route which passes through the region, between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley.

The videos are shown on BEAM, Virgin Trains’ complimentary on-board content platform.

Patrick McCall, Co-Chairman for Virgin Trains, said, “We know a lot of our customers lead busy and stressful lives, so we wanted to launch an exclusive channel to make their journeys an even more positive and relaxed experience.”

Mark Rowland, director of fundraising and communications for the Mental Health Foundation, said: “A train journey can be a great time for reflection – a perfect excuse to dedicate some time to yourself, disconnecting from the pressures of modern life and taking a step towards becoming more mindful.”
