A SQUASH club that faced closure has been taken over and is to be run as a community leisure club.

Following the threat that Leyburn Squash Club may close, a small group of dedicated players decided not to let it happen.

They secured an initial six-month lease, and the club has reopened as Leyburn Community Leisure Club, a non-profit organisation.

Chaired by Ken Readshaw, the new committee is determined to make the club work. The club will open every day; they will offer professional coaching facilities, but have to rely on volunteers to cover reception and the bar.

Amanda Adamson said: “We are determined to keep the club open and have had messages of support from England Squash. If the club closes it will be lost forever.”

The club has five teams that compete in local leagues. It hopes to attract new players along with any non-playing volunteers to help with administration, reception maintenance duties.

The club is open weekdays from noon, Saturdays 10am and Sundays 2pm; to contact the club or a committee member to help call 01969-622929 or email leyburncommunitylc@gmail.com.
