A GROUP of conscientious young people spent part of their valuable summer holidays tidying up an overgrown play area.

The National Citizen Service is a youth programme for 15 to 17-year-olds that aims to build skills for work and life, take on new challenges and meet new friends. It runs in the spring, summer and autumn and the participants undertake a team project that will boost their community. It was suggested to this year’s North Yorkshire volunteers they spend their voluntary service doing a clean-up of the slightly-neglected and overgrown play area in Middleham.

Adele Lynch, primary lead for NCS, said: “The idea of the clean-up was suggested and they went for it. They spent two days in hot weather weeding, cutting and clearing. Everyone has worked extremely hard and will have gained a great deal of satisfaction from the experience.”

The site was visited by Middleham Councillor Martin Cade and town clerk David Keep who thanked the team for their efforts. To find out about National Citizen Service visit http://flyingfutures.org/.
