THE A1 will be closed from 8pm on Saturday August 13 until 8am on the following day northbound between Scotch Corner and Junction 56 (Barton) to allow contractors for Highways England to reconstruct the northbound carriageway.

A strategic diversion route will be in place at junction 49 where northbound traffic will be directed off the A1 to use the A19 and will re-join at junction 60 (Bradbury Interchange).

Motorists joining the A1 north of junction 49 will be diverted at Scotch Corner via the A66/A67.

Then between 8am and 8pm on Sunday August 14 the A1 will re-open between Scotch Corner and junction 56 (Barton) in a single lane to allow motorists to continue their journey north on the A1.

Highways England assistant project manager, Charlotte Wright, said:

“We do not take the decision to close any major routes lightly but in order to carry out this work safely it is essential we close these sections of the A1.”

During the closure, clearly signed diversions will be in place and drivers are being advised to allow an extra 50 minutes for their journeys and check the latest traffic conditions before they set off.

When completed, the long awaited A1 Leeming to Barton scheme will create a continuous motorway-standard route between London and Newcastle, including the M1 and A1M.
