A DALES town with strong connections to a medieval king is hosting a weekend in his honour.

Middleham Castle in Wensleydale was the favourite amongst the many royal residencies of Richard III and this weekend the town will celebrate the historic sovereign's patronage with a weekend of varied talks and concerts.

The regal weekend starts on Friday (July 1) at the church often frequented by both kingmaker the Earl of Warwick and his protégé, King Richard 111 - St Alkelda’s.

It will host evening of mediaeval music and song followed by a beacon lighting at the castle. On Saturday, at the Middleham Key Centre, experts will take part in an evening of talks. Among the advocates is Philippa Langley, the woman whose drive and determination led to the discovery of the king's body, John Ashdown-Hill and Annette Carson.

On Sunday, a similar event will be held in the church, with different topics discussed.

Throughout the weekend there will be re-enactments, a mediaeval historical market, wandering minstrels and Morris dancers. At the castle there will be the chance to meet the King and Queen along with other events for all ages.

Middleham Town Councillor Martin Cade, a member of the organising committee, said: " We are all very excited about the weekend. It promises to be full of exciting and interesting events and the chance to hear some real experts.

“King Richard III has a strong connection with Middleham and a big following. We are expecting visitors from all over the world to our historical oasis.”
