A PLAY exploring the experiences of unmarried teen mothers in the 1960s who were coerced into giving up their babies is to be performed in Richmond.

The Best Thing is a touring production from Vamos Theatre – the UK’s leading mask theatre company which launched the show to sell-out audiences at the London International Mime Festival earlier this year.

The show will be performed at the Georgian Theatre Royal on Tuesday, May 3, at 7.30pm.

The wordless drama highlights the plight of women whose babies were forcibly taken away on the grounds that it was “the best thing” for them and their children.

It adds a voice to the ongoing campaign, the Movement for an Adoption Apology, that is seeking contrition from the British Government for women who suffered in this way.

The story reveals aspects of the 1960s through action music and fashion, and charts the story of a young woman who accidentally becomes pregnant and the emotional effects on her daughter who is given up for adoption.

The production is suitable for ages 12 and over, and is equally accessible to hearing and deaf audiences.
