A COMMUNITY deep in the Yorkshire Dales has become a real life-saver –thanks to the efforts of a local nurse.

Diane Coleman, who lives in Arkengarthdale, took it upon herself to raise funds for community defibrillators in the dale.

Spearheading a campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of defibrillators in remote areas, she approached the local parish council, the dale's sports association and local businesses for funding.

And she was delighted when, through their substantial contributions boosted by donations from residents and fundraising events, sufficient money was raised to purchase two units as well as to cover their ongoing maintenance costs.

“As a nurse I am only too aware of how every minute counts following a cardiac arrest,” said Diane.

“In a rural area such as Arkengarthdale, having a defibrillator on hand could be critical in aiding survival until medical treatment gets through.

“I am deeply grateful for the kindness and generosity of everyone in the Dale who has contributed to the units.”

The defibrillators have now been installed in visible positions at the Red Lion, in Langthwaite, and at the CB Inn.
