THE 36th annual Onion Show held at the Ship Inn, Richmond, has seen the defending champion retain his crown.

The show, on Saturday at the pub in Frenchgate, had 22 entries and judging was by Trevor Hill.

Rob Glover retained his title by coming first in the show with a set of 24 inch onions, followed in second place by Carol Scott and in third place was John Broadhurst.

Mr Glover cleaned up this year, also winning categories for the best set of onions, best onion in show and the heaviest onion weighing in at 9lb 3oz.

The most improved grower trophy this year was won by John Broadhurst, and Judge Trevor Hill said that the standard of onions continues to improve year on year.

There was a new category this year, a fancy dressed onion, of which there were six entrants, which was judged and the winners voted for by the pub locals. The fancy dressed onion was jointly won by Rob Glover and Nick Miller.

Any local people wishing to join the club can submit a letter requesting to join to the AGM on Sunday, October 4 at 7pm at the Ship Inn.
