A CYCLIST suffered serious injuries after falling off his bike in the Yorkshire Dales.

The accident occurred at around 5pm on Wednesday in the village of Askrigg, near Hawes.

The man was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough with what the Great north Air Ambulance staff said were "significant chest injuries".

A spokesman for the service said: "At 5.10pm today the Great North Air Ambulance was asked to assist Yorkshire Air Ambulance with a patient in Wensleydale.

"The gentleman as cycling through Askrigg when he came off his bike and sustaining chest injuries.

"Our team worked along side a road crew from Yorkshire Ambulance.

"After an assessment, the patient was given strong painkillers and flown to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough in 15 minutes with significant chest injuries. He arrived in a stable condition."
