AN EXHIBITION of the artwork of two legendary musicians will open in North Yorkshire next week.

The Garden Rooms at Tennants, Leyburn, will be holding a selling exhibition, in association with Keith Denney, of the art of John Lennon and Miles Davis from Thursday, May 21 until Saturday, June 6.

The exhibition is a rare opportunity for lovers of both music and art alike to gain an insight into the minds of the world-famous performers.

There will be more than 30 works by John Lennon in the exhibition, ranging in price from £300 to £4,000, and more than 40 works by Miles Davis ranging from £1,200 to £35,000.

John Lennon had attended Liverpool Art Institute between 1957 and 1960; however his early inclinations were soon eclipsed by music and the phenomenon that was The Beatles.

In 1968, shortly before his marriage to Yoko Ono and the break-up of the band, Lennon returned to art, primarily drawing and sketching in pen and ink.

Miles Davis turned to art during the last decade of his life. From 1980 he began sketching and painting, and developed a graphic style with vivid colours and bold geometric shapes, influenced by African tribal art.

The exhibition will be launched with an open evening on Thursday, May 21 from 6pm to 8pm, which will include a book signing by George Cole, author of The Last Miles, the music of Miles Davis 1980 – 1991.
