FIVE 19th century sketchbooks, usually stored in carefully controlled conditions at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, have gone on display at Kiplin Hall near Richmond.

The sketchbooks are the work of the Egyptologist, Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875), who was a regular visitor at Kiplin Hall, the home of the 4th Earl and Countess of Tyrconnel.

During his visits, he made paintings and drawings. Five of his original watercolours are on display as part of the Hall’s new archaeology exhibition, Charting Chipeling: 1,001Finds, showcasing some of the research and discoveries made in last year’s Heritage Lottery funded archaeology project.

Central to the exhibition is a late Bronze Age gold torque bracelet, which Richmond Town Council has just returned to Kiplin Hall, near Scorton, following a 50-year loan.

Alongside many of last year’s finds is a small collection of Roman objects on loan from the British Museum. These items were found at Castle Hills, Catterick, by the Earl of Tyrconnel in 1846.

The sketchbooks are on loan to Kiplin Hall until the end of October

Kiplin Hall and the Charting Chipeling: 1,001 Finds exhibition is open Sunday to Wednesday until October 28, from 2-5pm. The exhibition is included in admission - adult £8.30; concession £7.30; child £4.30.
