AN OLD railway weighbridge hut is to be opened to the public to raise awareness of the history and future of the Wensleydale Railway.

The weighbridge hut in Hawes sits opposite the Dales Countryside Museum and was once an area of great activity when coal and other goods were weighed for dispatch from the station by rail or road.

The hut has now been restored by Yorkshire Dales National Park volunteers and leased to the Wensleydale Railway Trust, who will open it to visitors on Tuesday, April 28 from 11am to 3pm.

Ruth Annison from the trust said: “There will be display boards with the history of the railway, trains that operated there, and the plans to move the line up the dale from Redmire to Aysgarth and Hawes to link it to the Garsdale to Hawes line.

“It is a lovely little hut, painted a striking yellow and green – which were apparently the traditional railway colours.”

There will be tea, coffee, fruit cake and Wensleydale cheese available and admission is free. For more information call 01609 774733 or email richard@dalesphoto.co.uk.
