ROADWORKS have allowed one the main routes in the Hambleton district to be given a proper spring clean.

Members of Hambleton District Council’s Street Scene team rolled up their sleeves to tackle the growing amount of rubbish littering the entrance to the A1 southbound at Leeming Bar.

After receiving complaints about the amount of litter the team decided to use weekend closure of the A1 through roadworks to give the area a thorough clean.

And their efforts saw them collect 122 bags of rubbish as well as four tyres, various car parts - and half a discarded tennis table.

The authority’s head of environmental services, Paul Staines, said: “Hambleton is determined to crackdown on flytipping which not only pollutes our countryside but costs the council considerable amounts of money to clear away.

“I would urge anyone witnessing flytipping to report it and help keep Hambleton clean and tidy.”
