A MOTORIST had a lucky escape after a fully-loaded cement mixer overturned onto a car.

The Northern Echo:

The driver of the lorry, a 41-year-old man, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital following the incident beside Catterick Racecourse and the Bridge House Hotel, in North Yorkshire.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The lorry fell onto a Vauxhall Insignia.

An occupant, a man in his 50s, suffered minor injuries.

The first attempt to pull the cement mixer back onto its wheels failed after the lorry apparently proved too heavy for the recovery vehicle, and another tow truck was summoned.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the cement lorry was fully loaded and weighed around 30 tonnes.

The Northern Echo:

He added: "The driver had a very lucky escape.

"The lorry just hit the front of the car and the driver suffered very minor injuries."

The road between Catterick Racecourse and Catterick Village is expected to be closed for several hours this afternoon while the vehicles are recovered.

Witnesses should call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
