POLICE have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with a suspected arson attack on a Richmond block of flats.

The local man was tonight (Wednesday, February 4) in police custody for questioning after the fire broke out in the communal area of flats in Willance Grove, Richmond, at around 6.55pm on Tuesday, February 3.

A number of residents had to be re-housed after fire and smoke damage had affected their homes.

A spokesman from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Fire crews from Richmond and Colburn attended the fire, and found considerable heat and fire damage had been caused to the communal area, and smoke damage had affected the flats themselves.”

Several occupants of the flats had to be re-homed on Tuesday night and one woman had to be treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene.
