POLICE were called to separate two pensioners fighting over a parking space outside a public library.

Shocked onlookers rang 999 after the men were seen rolling around on the floor in the car park at Thornborough Hall, in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to the scene at around 1.30pm on Monday.

Paramedics also attended the incident.

A 70-year-old man suffered a scuff to his neck and was referred to his GP as a precaution, while a 66-year-old man was left with a scuff to his eye.

It is understood the 66-year-old did not need medical treatment.

According to witnesses, the argument started because a car belonging to one of the men was blocking in the other man's vehicle in the small car park.

As well as the public library, Thornborough Hall is home to Leyburn Town Council offices, a Richmondshire District Council community office and several businesses.

Thornborough Hall Gardens sheltered housing complex is adjacent to the hall.

The car park is also used by shoppers visiting the nearby town centre.

North Yorkshire Police said no action had been taken against the pensioners so far.

A spokeswoman added: "We were called to Thornborough Hall at 1.30pm on Monday to reports of two men involved in an altercation and rolling around on the floor.

"A 70-year-old was slightly reddened on the side of the neck and was taken to his GP for a check-up. Thee 66-year-old suffered slight reddening to his left eye."

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they attended Thornborough Hall gardens at around 1.35am on Monday.

"We treated an elderly male and he was referred to his own GP," she added.
