FIRMS are invited to help one of the country’s most endangered – and beloved – animals.

From this month, businesses can sponsor a feeder at a special red squirrel viewpoint at Snaizeholme, near Hawes.

The viewing area lies in the heart of the Widdale Red Squirrel Reserve and was created by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and the landowner to allow people to watch the animals as they feed in their natural habitat.

The first people to take up the offer are Neil and Jane McNair, who run Low Mill Guest House in Bainbridge.

“We loved being able to see the red squirrels at the special viewing area and we know it’s something many of our guests will enjoy having the chance to do too,” said Mr McNair.

“We think it’s a great opportunity to be able to support this project, along with other businesses in Hawes.”

The park’s tourism officer, Kathryn Storey, said: “We are hoping a business will cover every month of the year.

“A £50 donation will pay for food for a month and, in return, the sponsors will be listed on our Nature in the Dales website at natureinthedales.org.uk and they will receive a certificate they can display in their businesses.”

Although the site is remote, the Little White Bus service offers visitors an “on-demand” service, picking up visitors from the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes.

“We think the scheme provides a great way of linking conservation with local businesses, while supporting the service provided by the Little White Bus,” said Ms Storey.
