A DALES market town hopes the launch of superfast broadband will quell the mass migration of young people in search of better connectivity to support jobs – but other nearby communities are still being left in the dark.

Hawes will be the next town to have the new technology switched on – and next Thursday’s launch is eagerly awaited by residents and visitors to the town.

Superfast North Yorkshire has installed 17 miles of fibre cable to allow Hawes to benefit from the technology, the longest single stretch of fibre cable in the country.

But other nearby villages are feeling snubbed as superfast broadband is still not on their horizon.

Aysgarth and Carperby do not currently have BT cabinets through which fibre cable can be connected, and will not be able to access broadband until phase two of the project, which will start next year.

Redmire, near Leyburn, has been promised superfast broadband since February but is still waiting to hear if it can be connected.

Redmire parish council clerk Sarah Weatherald said: “Redmire residents are feeling increasingly marginalised by the lack of progress – it is effectively being left behind most other communities in Wensleydale and the wider Dales.”

At an Upper Dales Area Partnership meeting last month John Moore, chief executive of NYnet which is delivering Superfast North Yorkshire, said phase one of the roll out was behind schedule and would now continue into March 2015.

Leader of Richmondshire District Council, Councillor John Blackie, who has several businesses based in the town and lives in nearby Hardraw, which is also being enabled by Superfast North Yorkshire, said he was excited about the move.

“The arrival of superfast broadband will be a transformational game-changer for the remoter communities we have here in the Upper Dales, as it will level the playing field for our deeply rural communities, and allow us to compete with the more populated areas of the country – the towns and the cities.

“I am sure its availability will play a key role in arresting the outflow of young people that has become a very worrying trend recently.

“Now they can stay here amidst our stunning scenery and we can compete for their presence on an equal footing.”

BT’s mobile showcase vehicle will be outside the Bay Tree Café and Bistro in the Market Place in Hawes from 9.30am to 2pm on October 16.
