A SURPRISE retirement party for a long-standing history teacher and head of year at a Richmond school celebrated the lasting effect he will have on the school.

On Monday, July 21, past and present members of staff from St Francis Xavier School gathered at the Holly Hill Inn, in Richmond, for a 1940s themed party for Michael Vasey.

Mr Vasey marked the end of his 39 years at the school, where he was both head of history and of year 10.

Headteacher Sharon Keelan-Beardsley said: “Michael has had a lasting positive impact on the lives of so many young people who have passed through St Francis Xavier School.

“He will be greatly missed by all of the staff and pupils and we wish him all the best for the next period in his life.

“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the party which was a great success.”

Mr Vasey said: “It was a wonderful party and I will miss the school but I’m now looking forward to spending more time with my wife, Anne, my children and grandchildren.

“I’ll also have more time for enjoying my canal boat, and my hobbies photography and antique cars.”
