THE WINNER of a competition to design a badge for North Yorkshire Armed Forced Day 2014 has handed over a donation to the Royal British Legion.

Richmond School pupil Grace Maddison-Potts, 12, came out on top of the HMS Heroes competition across schools in Bedale, Richmond and Catterick Garrison for her badge for Armed Forces Day, on June 28, and raised more than £1,000.

Hazel Thompson, from North Yorkshire HMS Heroes, a group within RBL which enables children to act as ambassadors for service families, said the cash raised would be split between RBL and local service children’s charity Scottie’s Special Soldiers.

Grace handed over a cheque for £600 to Royal British Legion.

Ms Thompson said: “HMS Heroes is about bringing service children together with like-minded people and giving them a voice.

“We ran a badge competition for Armed Forces Day, which anyone could enter, and Ripon Armed Forces Day organiser Kenn Hart was our judge.

“He picked Grace’s badge as the overall winner, and they were then sold at various events over the last month and raised more than £1,000.”

She added that there was still badges left to buy and money to collect.

The cheque presentation was made to Richmond School’s service children’s co-ordinator Keith Allan because RBL representative for Richmond David Johnson could not be present.

A donation will also be given to Scotty's Special Soldiers in September.
