A POPULAR locomotive is set to visit the region this month.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is making final preparations together for the arrival of the Royal Scot, from Saturday, March 25.

This year the railway celebrates 50 years since the formation of the charitable trust and to set the wheels in motion for the anniversary year, the Royal Scot will steam in and set off the new season in style.

The loco, which was built in 1927, was the first in a new breed of steam locomotives, made by the LMS for their fastest passenger services from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

She was then rebuilt by British Railways in 1950 and went on to serve another 12 years in traffic on the West Coast Main Line.

She was eventually retired in October 1962.

After a major overhaul, Royal Scot returned to steam in September 2015 and made her successful main line debut in December that year, with test runs from Crewe to Carnforth.

Tickets for Royal Scot are now on sale, with adult prices starting from £30 and children £15, with a family ticket available for £64.

Royal Scot will be at the railway from March 25 to 30, excluding the 27, and on April 1 and 2.
