A RAIL journey which traverses the rugged North York Moors National Park has made the top ten best steam rail experiences in Europe.
The North York Moors Railway, run by volunteers, come in at number eight on the list.
It covers a distance of 18 miles, and is one of the UK's longest heritage railway lines.
The line connects the picturesque market town of Pickering and the village of Grosmont and is the largest preserved heritage railway in the UK in terms of route mileage operated and passenger numbers. Carefully-restored carriages are hauled by diesel and steam locomotives along the picturesque route, which reportedly features one of the oldest railway tunnels in the world.
Also featuring on the top ten list are other heritage lines in the UK, including the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig in Scotland; and the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Line, Wales.
In Europe, steam lines featured include the Brienz Rothorn Railway, Switzerland; the Budapest Children's Railway, and the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Lake Baikal Route, Russia.
