AN AMBITIOUS scheme to create a major artwork and visitor attraction project in the vast Dalby Forest near Pickering, has won support from the Arts Council, Ryedale District Council and the Forestry Commission.

Forest Artworks aims to involve local people and tourists in developing the artwork concept, said Julian Rudd, the head of economy at Ryedale.

"Considerable capital investment is needed to progress the project and to ensure that Dalby Forest has the right infrastructure and facilities to cope with the expected growth in visitor numbers over the next 10 years," he said.

The Forestry Commission is now looking to develop an investment plan for the ambitious programme of work which will be largely focussed on the Adderstone area of the forest.

Among the catalogue of attractions will be the creation of new trails, play facilities, a range of sports facilities, especially for climbing, a cycle trail and a dry stone wall maze,

The project would also increase the capacity of the forest to attract large scale national and international events, such as mountain bike championships and concerts.

In addition, there are also plans for low-key overnight accommodation to be built in the forest.

Mr Rudd said the venture would have big potential benefits to the Ryedale economy, with more visitors to the district, increased tourist spending, more recreational facilities and access to cultural assets.

The scheme is now to be made a major project in Ryedale's Economic Action Plan.
