RENEWED calls have been made for an inquiry into the volume of accidents on a key North York Moors route after a motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital having crashed into a deer.

The crash happened at about 1pm on October 29 on the B1257 at Newgate Bank, between Chop Gate and Helmsley.

A Great North Air Ambulance spokesman said: “A man in his 50s was assessed and treated for his injuries before, 11 minutes later, he was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. He arrived in a stable condition.”

Bilsdale resident Natalie Roberts, who passed the scene soon after the crash, said she has been calling for the signage for months, and was told in March that it would be put in place.

She said: “While returning home with my two young daughters in the car, we were caught up after an awful accident on the road in the same place as the last two times.

“We have lived in Bilsdale for 15 months, and I have been witness to four accidents where the air ambulance has had to attend. I am not sure whose responsibility it is to control deer on this road, but surely the number of accidents in the same place has to be investigated.”

In 2013, Newgate Bank was the scene of an accident in which a motorcyclist overtaking at speeds of about 130mph died after crashing head-on into a car, killing the driver

A North Yorkshire County Council spokesman confirmed the deer-crossing warning signs were set to be put in place. “Two signs have been ordered for this location on Newgate Bank and they should be installed in six to eight weeks,” he said.
