A KEEN cyclist is preparing to push his body to the limits of its capabilities with a gruelling ride of the equivalent of climbing Everest.

Mike Metcalfe, 55, from Newby Wiske, was inspired to challenge himself to riding repeatedly up and down Rosedale Chimney – a notoriously steep one in three incline in the North York Moors until he has completed 29,000 feet – to raise cash for Alzheimer’s Research.

He will also be raising money for Rosedale Care Home in Catterick Garrison, where both his parents live, and his father with dementia is cared for.

Mr Metcalfe started his ride – known as ‘Everesting’ - today at 6am and work his way through the night until he completes the challenge on Sunday lunchtime.

“I cared for dad before he moved into the home so I know how terrible the disease is. I wanted to give something back to the home because they are fantastic to both mum and dad, but I also want to raise funds for the research charity in the hope that one day we can beat the horrible condition,” he said.

In preparation for his ride, Mr Metcalfe has been on bike rides in the French Alps and has been taking part in regular 200km rides at home.
