FIRE crews were called after a lorry became stuck in a river in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire County Council tweeted a photo from the scene in Grosmont.

A spokesman wrote: "@NorthYorksFire are in attendance, where the lorry is stuck in the river at #Grosmont. Nobody hurt #OurDay".

Andrew Santon, from North Yorkshire County Council Highways, said: "The van got stuck after it attempted to cross a ford which was deep and fast-flowing.

"The marker at the edge of the river and in the middle of the ford was at the two to three feet mark - we would advise all motorists to find alternative routes if faced with a swollen ford."

The ford is on a minor road coming off the C56 between Grosmont and Egton. The road remains open but motorists are advised to avoid all fords.

Mr Santon added: "The fire and rescue service remain with the vehicle while awaiting recovery services.

"There is a fear that the van could tip over in the river as conditions can change very quickly."

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews were called at 11.17am to reports of a vehicle stuck in a ford at Grosmont.

"A water rescue team from Whitby were sent to the scene, along with crews from Lythe and Robin Hood’s Bay.
