TRADERS with firms in and around a national park are being invited to attend free workshops about astrology, fossils and foraging in the area in a drive to promote tourism.

The Know Your Coast sessions organised by the North York Moors National Park Authority aim to get businesses, such as accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants, attractions to step into the shoes of coastal visitors and try out a range of activities and experiences.

The authority hopes the experiences will enable traders to recommend places for visitors to go.

The first session, on Wednesday, (September 17) will see wildlife experts Richard Baines and Steve Race from Yorkshire Coast Nature lead a walk along the Cleveland Way.

Other workshops will include hunting for dinosaur footprints, sea-faring folklore and smuggling history as well as North York Moors Tourism Network sessions about low-cost marketing tips.

The sessions are part of the Sea Life, See Life project, covering a 36-mile stretch of coastline from Saltburn to Cloughton, north of Scarborough, the majority of which is within the national park.

A park authority spokeswoman said: “We know from experience that people really love word-of-mouth recommendations and insider knowledge when they’re visiting an area.

"It helps people plan their days much better, encourages them to linger longer and make them more likely to spread the message that the national park coastline is a must-visit.”
