SEARCH teams looking for an elderly man missing from his home have found a body.

Peter William Johnson, 77, from the Cropton area of Pickering, had not been seen by his neighbours for several days and was reported missing on Saturday afternoon (July 25).

His family said Mr Johnson was in an increasingly confused state and due to his age, and for medical reasons, his disappearance was being treated as high-risk by police.

A full search involving specialist search teams from North Yorkshire Police, a helicopter from the National Police Air Service and Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team was launched.

After setting up a mobile control centre, the searchers spent until late on Saturday and most of Sunday scouring the rural area on the edge of the North York Moors.

At about 3pm today, search teams discovered a body on land to the north of Cropton, just south of Cropton Forest. No formal identification has yet been carried out.
