THREE young triplets will be celebrating their birthday this weekend - but their cake will not be the usual fare.

For this playful trio are Sumatran tiger cubs, born on March 22 last year and now among the star attractions at Flamingo Land zoo near Pickering in North Yorkshire.

However normal birthday cakes are designed with humans in mind and are simply not suitable for the tigers' diet.

So zookeepers have come up with a suitable alternative and plan to give Kuasa, Mentari and Bulan some tasty meat in cardboard boxes designed as cake.

Their birthday on Sunday coincides with the zoo and theme park’s opening for the new season and visitors that day can visit the bridge above their enclosure to colour in a birthday message for the cubs which will be used to decorate he crossing.

A zoo spokesman said: “Recent estimates of population levels of Sumatran tigers in the wild have been as low as 400 so we are extremely proud of being part of this significant increase in world population numbers.

“We hope to be able to breed Sumatran tigers here again in the future as part of the European breeding programme.”
