ALMOST 2,000 volunteers have been recruited to welcome spectators to the first Tour de Yorkshire international cycle race in May.
The Tour Makers, who were recruited from the 10,000 volunteers who helped at last year’s Tour de France Grand Départ, will aim to ensure the one million people expected to turn out for the three stages for the 515km race has an enjoyable and safe time.
The volunteers, who completed a training programme for the Grand Départ, will have additional training, developed by Sheffield Hallam University, from West Yorkshire Police over the next couple of months.
Stage one of the race on Friday, May 1, will feature numerous climbs and showcase vast areas of the North York Moors National Park and Yorkshire coast, before a finish in Scarborough.
Stage two, will revisit Ryedale before a climax on the streets of York, while stage three, on Sunday, May 3, will start cross West Yorkshire and finish in Leeds.
The race will be shown live on television in the UK, on Eurosport in countries around the world, and a huge television audience is expected.
