RAIL passengers are getting the chance to watch the miles slip by while enjoying a drink with origins that are centuries old.

For one month only Grand Central is serving up Ampleforth Abbey Beer on its services to London.

The beer is based on a Benedictine recipe that dates back to 1608 and won the abbey, near Helmsley, the best drinks producer category at the most recent Flavours of Herriot Country Awards.

Abbey spokeswoman Gillian Dewar said: “Our beer is based on a centuries old recipe, but having it served on trains is new for us.

“We’re really pleased to be able to extend the reach and for passengers travelling up and down the country to enjoy its flavour while taking in the beautiful scenery along the route.”

Grand Central’s chief operating officer Sean English said: “Our trains already feature a selection of locally sourced food and drink products, ensuring that passengers receive a taste of the dynamic flavours available along our routes and that the variety available within our local communities is showcased on board.

“Ampleforth Abbey Beer is a great addition to this and we are delighted to have it on board as a limited edition.”
