BUSINESSES and landowners are being given the chance to discover how they can make the most of this year’s new Tour de Yorkshire event.

The international cycling race – part of the legacy of last year’s Tour de France – will be crossing the North York Moors on May 1.

And the National Park Authority is offering free advice to anyone looking to provide facilities like camping, parking and refreshments on their land.

Spectators are expected to gather along the route but particularly at the big climbs - Dalby Forest, Rosedale Abbey, Grosmont, Briggswath and Robin Hood’s Bay.

Although there are exemptions that allow for certain temporary uses of land without permission for such events there are exceptions so businesses and landowners are asked to talk to the park authority first.

The park’s director of planning, Chris France, said: “Excitement is building around this prestigious event and it’s understandable that people will want to take the opportunity of the day to provide additional parking or camping on their land.

“Ultimately we want to help people maximise the potential economic benefit of the race itself and the opportunities that the international publicity surrounding the event will afford, while ensuring the stunning landscape to be broadcast around the world is protected.”

The park is hosting a free Welcome to Yorkshire roadshow on February 23 at 1.30pm in the National Park Centre at Danby and several more are being held by the Ryedale and Scarborough councils.

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity said: “We saw a huge appetite for all things Yorkshire last year when we hosted the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, and this new race will bring back some of the world’s best teams.

“This means spectators from far and wide and the most fantastic advert our county can wish for – global television coverage.

“The roadshows will help businesses prepare in the run up to the event, race days themselves and of course long in to the future.”

The other roadshows will be held at Raithwaite Hall, Whitby, on February 25 and March 12; Scarborough University on March 2 and 11; the Memorial Hall, Pickering, on March 3; Ryedale Leisure Centre, Norton near Malton, on March 5; and Rosedale Reading Rooms on March 9
