ORGANISERS of an international cycling race are to hold a series of roadshows to advise firms on how to make the most of the event.

The Tour de Yorkshire roadshows, run by tourism body Welcome to Yorkshire and councils, will also offer information about brand guidelines and key information ahead of the inaugural three-day race in May.

Events will be held at the North York Moors National Park on February 23, Whitby on February 25 and March 12, Scarborough on March 2 and March 11, Pickering on March 3 and Norton on March 5.

An economic impact study of the Tour de France last year showed that over £100m was generated for the Yorkshire economy, and organisers say the Tour de Yorkshire, which will feature more than 500km of Yorkshire roads, will offer a geographical spread for tourists and visitors to choose from.

Welcome to Yorkshire says the nature of the route, which this year will feature the North York Moors, Whitby and York, means cycling fans will find dramatic backdrops, tough climbs and Yorkshire landmarks in which to enjoy the race.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said businesses had been positive in signing up to the roadshows, highlighting what the Tour de France Grand Depart legacy event will mean to them and their communities, both on and off the route.

He said: “This new race will bring back some of the world’s best teams, meaning spectators from far and wide and the most fantastic advert our county can wish for, global television coverage. "

Councillor John Weighell, leader of North Yorkshire County Council, said: “Our experience of the Tour de France was simply phenomenal, and the positive effects are still being felt for a huge range of businesses across the region."
