VOLUNTEERS from the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were given an early morning shout out to help find a walker who had gone missing.

North Yorkshire Police raised the alarm at 1am on Thursday to search for the man on the North York Moors, south of Osmotherley.

The 30-year-old was last seen in the Hawnby area sometime around 6pm so volunteers began searching key foot paths and places he might shelter.

As dawn approached both the Scarborough Mountain Rescue Team and Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team were placed on stand-by ready to relieve the 22 members of the Cleveland Team when the walker arrived home.

He had been walking on the moor and lost his way as night fell and mist descended and he decided to sit it out on the moor until day-break.

A spokesman for the Team said: "Fortunately it was a relatively mild night and the man did exactly the right thing by sitting tight and not getting into further difficulties. It was obviously a great relief to see him safe and well."
