TWO walkers had to be rescued after getting into difficulties over the weekend.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team responded to both incidents.

The first one came at 1.30 pm on Saturday when 17-year-old male, involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award challenge, sustained a severe muscular strain and was having difficult carrying on with the challenge.

Because he was in an isolated section of the moor near Egton Bridge, some distance from road access a D of E supervisor had called for help.

The location on the moor was on the border between the area covered by Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team and the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team. As a result there was liaison between the Teams and members from both Teams arrived on scene.

The young man was then given pain relief and before being driven to a point where he was met by the supervisor.

The second call came at 7am on Sunday morning when a coast to coast walker camping close to the Cleveland Way and had woken up possibly suffering the effects of food poisoning.

The 19-year-old male from Milton Keynes had tried to walk off the moor but quickly realised he could not.

His rescuers decided to stretcher him off the moor and down to the waiting ambulance.

A spokesperson for the Team said: “The young man was an experienced walker and this was just one of those unfortunate things that can happen. We were just glad we could help to get him to safety and on the way to hospital and full check over as soon as possible.”
