THE 154th Danby Show has been hailed a success, despite the weather trying to throw a dampener on proceedings.

Visitor and competitor numbers were high and organisers only had a torrential downpour on the afternoon to contend with.

The show field in the North York Moors village was packed throughout the day while family fun and entertainment kept everyone happy.

Show secretary Liz Sheard said: “It has been a great year, entry levels have been up and the gate receipts have only been a little down on last year but the weather has played a part in that.

“Despite the heavy rain, I don’t think we had any problems getting people in and out of the show venue and everyone seems to have had a really good time.”

Sedgefield farmer Jonathan Craggs came out top of the herd with his entry, Tutti Fruitti, winning the Best Butcher’s Beef section before being crowned Best in Show.

He said: “I don’t usually manage to get over to the show myself as it is a really busy time of year on the farm for me but winning Best in Show has made it worthwhile – I think I’ll have to come again next year.”

As well as the agricultural element to the show, the horticultural side of the show also proved popular with the exhibition tent being full throughout the day.

Mary Anderson, who was at the show with her three children, said: “I always come to Danby because it is quite a small show but that means you can have a better time with children as they can get close to the animals.”
