THE fires may be stoked, but the grooves will be supercool on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway this weekend.

The heritage railway will turn back the clock 50 years to celebrate the Swingin’ Sixties on June 14 and 15.

Live bands will take over the station platforms at Levisham and Goathland, with performers including New Amen Corner and the Nashville Teens.

Jive Express and Tex Leon and Friends complete the line-up, performing each afternoon at the two stations, with real ale bars helping create the 60s club atmosphere.

Alongside the music, a special pop-up museum will open in the education centre at Pickering Station, packed with memorabilia, while cars from the period will be on display at Levisham and Goathland.

“Whether you lived through the 60s, or simply love exploring a different time, this is a great time to jump aboard the train to enjoy lots of different aspects of the era,” said railway spokesman Danielle Ramsey.

“For the railways itself, this was a real time of change, as it closed as part of the national rail network following the infamous Beeching Report in 1965, but we’re going to do everything we can to make up for the lost years with this celebration of the swinging sixties.”
