FAMILIES with youngsters are being urged to indulge their taste for adventure – by joining the North York Moors’ Explorer Club.

The club is a way for families with children aged five to14 to learn about the habitats of the National Park while playing an active role in caring for them.

It combines practical conservation projects such as tree planting and footpath restoration with a closer look at the area’s wildlife and habitats.

Child-sized tools are available and wildlife cameras, digital microscopes and other kit are on offer to those attending to enhance the experience. Families are also given suggestions of activities to do at home.

There is also an opportunity to get involved in the Cleveland Way Adoption Scheme – a project set up to help care for the trail and monitor the wildlife along its 110-mile route.

Families signing up will be asked to walk a particular section of the Cleveland Way at least three times a year and will be given a small tool kit to carry out simple maintenance work such as pruning back vegetation.

The club meets one Sunday a month for six months and an information day is being held on June 22 from 2.30pm to 4pm at the National Park Centre in Danby.
