A MAN has died after being hit by a train at Northallerton station at 9.47am this morning, in what is believed to be suicide.

British Transport Police arrived at the Boroughbridge Road station just after 9am, and North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue assisted in retrieving the body.

A spokeswoman from British Transport Police said: “Paramedics from North Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the man’s identity and inform his family.

“BTP is treating the incident as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A man who did not wish to be named said he arrived at the station shortly after the incident occurred, and he believed only one woman witnessed the incident and she was quickly taken away from the scene.

Following the incident there were delays of up to 60 minutes between Darlington, Middlesbrough and York which will continue until further notice, although trains are running again.
