A SCHEME to build three shops and 11 flats in one of a town centre’s most historic premises has been unveiled.

Stockton-based firm Arkgrove has applied for both planning permission and listed building consent to create new shop fronts off Northallerton High Street, near Tesco supermarket.

The planning application to Hambleton District Council – at a site featuring an early to mid-19th Century grade II listed property with Doric columns and canted oriel window – includes a first floor ‘infill’ extension to Regency Mews, a two-storey extension to Romanby Court.

The application site lies within Northallerton Conservation Area.

A spokesman for the developers said the new-build elements of the development would be no higher than existing buildings on the site involved.

He added: “The development is clearly suitable in the context of existing land uses and will result in a significant visual improvement upon the current site, large parts of which are of low quality, with resulting benefits for the appearance of the wider area.”
