PLANS to redevelop the former Northallerton prison site will go on display at a public exhibition this month.

People can view proposals for the new Treadmills development to the east of the High Street, during an exhibition taking place on June 15 in Northallerton Town Hall and then All Saints Church in Northallerton the following day.

The £16m Treadmills development will feature retail and co-working space in addition to a cinema, restaurants, a heritage centre and a large square for public events. Discount supermarket Lidl has recently been revealed as the retail anchor for the project.

Following the exhibition, the information will be displayed on the Treadmills website - thetreadmills.co.uk - and at Hambleton District Council Civic Centre.

The scheme is being put together by the Central Northallerton Development Company, a joint venture by Hambleton District Council and Hull-based regeneration specialist Wykeland Group. Wykeland development director Jonathan Stubbs said: “Treadmills presents a once in a multi-generation opportunity to deliver a development that will enhance and safeguard the future prosperity of Northallerton. In the process, the scheme will create 150 to 200 jobs,” he said.

“The scheme has been designed to be an extension of the town, with excellent pedestrian links and new car parking spaces. We have worked closely with Historic England to ensure that the development respects the unique heritage of the site and we will be incorporating the remaining prison buildings into Treadmills to create a scheme that really reflects the character of the local area.

“Given the importance of Treadmills to Northallerton we are keen to engage as many local people in the consultation as possible.”
