RUNNERS battled the heat on Sunday to take part in the increasingly popular Northallerton 10k race.

Although it was only the third race held, more than a thousand people registered from all over the country. The winner Daniel Haymes, from Derby Athletic Club smashed last year's time by over a minute, completing the race in 33 minutes and two seconds. Louise Talman, from Darlington Harriers was the winning female.

Crowds packed the town centre to watch the determined runners aged from 15 to 82. The race is organised by the Pendragon Trust which runs a sensory centre for disabled youngsters in the town.

Last year's event raised more than £10,000 in vital funds for the centre.

A spokesman said: “What a fabulous day, we are so proud of all our runners, they were brilliant we can’t thank them enough.”
