ONE of the county’s most famous climbers has turned his experiences into a film.

The Ritz Cinema in Thirsk will present the life of Northallerton's Alan Hinkes – who was the first Briton to climb all the world’s highest mountains.

It has been made by acclaimed filmmaker Terry Abraham, best known for producing and directing BBC hits Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike and Life of a Mountain: Blencathra.

Mr Hinkes is the first and only British mountaineer to have climbed all 14 mountains over 8,000m.

The film includes footage of Masham, Malham, Swaledale, Eskdale and Roseberry topping.

Marc Davies, of The Ritz Cinema, said: “Those of us with an interest in climbing may have followed in Alan's steps locally, but once you get to get to the 8,000m peaks it's simply another world.

“Alan is a bit under the radar to the broader public but his achievements are hugely significant and deserve broader acknowledgement. I hope Terry's film will change this.”

It will be screened at 7.30pm on Sunday, March 11.

Tickets are £8 and are only available on the night.
