A MAN who calculated how many beds it would take to cover the distance between a pub and a local shop has been rewarded for his slumbersome sums.

Steven Hague entered a competition to calculate how many beds would cover the distance between the Northallerton store, Barkers Home and The Crosby Village Inn at Thornton-le-Beans.

He predicted it would take 3,116 beds to cover the 3.9-mile distance, which was nearest to the correct answer of 3,138 and has won a £50 voucher to spend in the store and lunch for two in its Tree Café.

The competition was organised by Barkers Home, as part of the Thornton-Le-Beans Village Show programme, which it sponsored.

Barkers Home director Ian Barker said: “We thought it would be a bit of fun to invite customers to guess how many beds it would take to cover the distance from Barkers Home and a nearby pub.

“We were inundated with entries, but Steven was closest to the mark.”
