COVERT cameras are being rolled out across Hambleton as part of a major crackdown on fly tipping.

In the past two years, reports of fly tipping have risen by more than 40 per cent and the number of abandoned cars discovered have doubled.

Consequently, the cost of clearing up has increased from more than £24,000 to almost £44,500 over the last year.

Councillor Stephen Watson, cabinet portfolio holder for waste services, said: “Reports of fly tipping and abandoned cars are on the increase in Hambleton but we are determined to catch the culprits.

“It has a major impact on the environment – it looks unsightly and presents a poor image to our visitors. The habitat of animals is also affected as well as the quality of life for residents.

“Tackling the problem in such a large area is difficult but our hidden cameras are being used as part of our crackdown.”

Anyone witnessing fly tipping is asked to report the incident.
