A COMMUNITY group recently cooked a Yorkshire breakfast for local residents to encourage people to help the environment by shopping locally.

Newton-le-Willows Climate Change Group put together the tasty meal by sourcing ingredients such as bacon, sausages, eggs and flour from its own community and adjacent villages.

More than 60 people attended the event and everyone gave a donation in return for the morning meal. It raised £100 for Hambleton Foodshare, which provides emergency food parcels for people in the district struggling to feed themselves.

Lisle Ryder, a member of the environmental group, said: “We were pleased that so many residents from Newton-le-Willows supported our event and that we were able to demonstrate how people can cut down on their food miles by shopping locally.”

Margaret Brice, who co-ordinates Hambleton Foodshare, said the donation will allow them to buy food when they are low on certain items.

She said: “This funding will enable us to purchase additional stocks when we are low of certain items during the forthcoming year.

“Every amount, large or small helps to supply food to the most vulnerable individuals and families who are struggling for whatever reason.

“We are delighted to have the support from Newton-le-Willows Climate Change group who clearly demonstrate their outward looking attitude to those in need and thank each person involved in the most successful event.”
