ESSENTIAL maintenance work is to be undertaken at Thornton Bridge in North Yorkshire, resulting in some overnight road closures.

The work at the bridge, which takes the road between Brafferton and Cundall in Hambleton over the River Swale, will be done in two phases.

It is planned to take August 21 to 26. There will be road closures between 8pm and 6am on August 23, 24 and 25 and a signposted diversion will be in operation.

Phase two will start on August 29 and be completed by September 8. There will be nightly road closures from 8pm to 6am and a signed diversion. The work will be suspended over the weekend period.

The county’s executive member for highways, Cllr Don Mackenzie, said: “We would like to apologise for any disruption that the work will cause and would ask residents for their co-operation to ensure the work is completed as safely and quickly as possible.
