A CHARITY which supports adults with learning difficulties is planning to throw open its doors to the public and showcase the talents of its members.

Chopsticks, based in Northallerton, will be holding the event to mark the charity’s “coming of age” as it celebrates its 21st anniversary.

The event – on Monday, July 24 – will feature wood work, glass crafts, gardening schemes and community outreach programmes.

Doors open at the Thurston Road, Northallerton site at 10am. There will be a programme of music performances by local artists, glass craft and woodwork demonstrations, and a tombola and free food will be served until 3pm.

The charity and social enterprise provides employment for adults with learning disabilities and services for clients with health and well-being related needs.

Charity administrator and development manager Phil Bramhall said: “The day promises to be a lively celebration of all the excellent work we have achieved so far, as well as a preview of some of our new innovative schemes - including ChopArts and Garden in the Yard.”

ChopArts involves recycling glass and mirror offcuts donated by local glazing firm, Northallerton Glass and preventing glass waste going to landfill. Chopsticks members and other clients with health related conditions produce bespoke coasters, chopping boards and name plaques.

Garden in the Yard is a greenscaping service for local businesses and community organisations. It weaves together woodworking skills with an understanding of the environment - members and staff of Chopsticks produce rustic handcrafted gardenware for industrial yards and building units.

“Both ChopArts and Garden in the Yard provide opportunities for vulnerable people to enhance their confidence, develop skills and to form friendships.

“The initiatives build on Chopsticks’ desire to innovate and work in partnership with health and social care organisations, and to engage with a diverse range of customers to celebrate the skills and achievements of its members and clients,” added Phil.
