TEENAGERS in Northallerton and the surrounding area are being given the chance to make an early start on a career in the fire service with the launch of a new course.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has a number of youth projects for young people to get involved in and one of these is the Young Firefighter scheme.

The scheme gives the opportunity for young people to get involved with an organisation that focuses on both team work, personal responsibility and discipline. It is also serves as a good foundation for those who wish to apply for a career in the Fire Service in the future.

The two-year Young Firefighter course will run after school hours at Northallerton Fire Station from September and is open to boys and girls aged 14 to 18.

It will require students to attend the fire station for two hours every Tuesday night between 7pm and 9pm during term time.

Throughout the course students will learn about the fire service, how to safely operate fire service pumps and ladders, wear breathing apparatus, learn the science behind fire and complete a BTEC in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community.

  • There are limited places available on the course so if you are interested in signing up or would like to know more information, please contact Adam.Farrow@northyorksfire.gov.uk.
